The Email:

The forthcoming election is an opportunity to fix Britain’s broken asylum system, and there’s one simple way to start.

The lack of safe routes to claim asylum in the UK has fuelled Channel crossings, and all the evidence shows that the only way to stop them is to create new safe routes.

Deterrents don’t work. Safe passage does.

The success of the Ukrainian visa scheme proves that. No Ukrainian has had to pay a smuggler to cross the Channel to escape the horrors of war and seek sanctuary in the UK – so why should refugees fleeing similar horrors from Afghanistan, Sudan and Eritrea have to?

Care4Calais and PCS Union have developed a comprehensive plan for Safe passage - apply, screen, provide a travel visa, then enter the asylum system as normal. This Safe passage plan could be implemented straight away - you can read how it would work here (https://care4calais.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Safe-Passage-Visa-Briefing.pdf)

The question I have, as a voter, is will your party commit to ending the hostile environment, and instead introduce a policy of Safe passage to start repairing our broken asylum system?

Yours sincerely
