Demand the pause on Syrian asylum claims is lifted

As one of your constituents, I am writing to ask you to oppose the Government’s ban on refugees being granted British citizenship.

A person’s right to seek safety is not based on how they travel to the country they are seeking sanctuary in. A person’s right to asylum is based on the dangers they are escaping.

The Government has failed to offer safe routes for people to claim asylum, forcing people to take dangerous journeys to do so. This ban on citizenships further punishes members of our community whose claims of fleeing war, persecution, and danger have been upheld by our asylum system because no safe route to claim asylum was available.

Banning citizenship will create a new group of non-citizens, granted permission to stay in the UK but denied the security and safety of a permanent home.

I call on you to support EDM: Refusal of Citizenship to Refugees Who Have Made Irregular Crossings, tabled by Nadia Whittome MP, and demand the ban on citizenship is lifted.

That this House expresses deep concern over the refusal of citizenship to refugees who have made irregular crossings to the UK; notes that this policy further punishes individuals whose claims of fleeing war, persecution, and danger have been upheld by the asylum system; further notes that, due to a lack of alternative safe routes, many people are forced to make unsafe crossings in order to claim asylum in the first place; is concerned that the refusal of citizenship denies these same individuals security and a safe, permanent home; and urges the Government to reconsider this policy.

The Letter

Dear Yvette Cooper

Since 6th March, over 1000 people have been killed due to rising violence in Syria, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Despite this, the UK Government is yet to lift the pause on Syrian asylum applications and decisions.

Need for asylum is, and always has been, specific to the individual. I am therefore writing to insist you end the Syrian pause which is leaving people in limbo and damaging lives.
