The Letter
As my Member of Parliament, I am writing to ask you to speak out and oppose the Government’s latest asylum reforms.
These reforms won’t fix problems in our asylum system. Nor will they reduce Channel crossings.
But they will mean survivors of torture, modern slavery and persecution will never feel settled, secure or safe in the UK.
They will effectively deny refugees permanent sanctuary.
People granted protection would have their claim reassessed every two and a half years. If at any stage the Government deems it would be safe for them to return to their home country, they would be deported. If a refugee goes through EIGHT such reviews (yes, TWENTY years of reviews), only then will they be able to apply for permanent residency.
For people whose claims are initially rejected, their appeal rights will be restricted.
And it will deny refugees the right to a family, by keeping families separated.
When you are seeking my vote at elections, you make all sorts of promises to me and my neighbours. Given the severity of the asylum reforms that have been announced, I say - don’t just tell me what you believe, show me.
Do you believe in treating people with compassion, and believe in the right for people fleeing war, torture and persecution to seek safety? Or do you believe in a cruel, inhumane hostile environment?
Please speak out against these reforms. If you won’t, it will show me what type of person has been elected to represent my community in Parliament.
