Thousands of people seeking safety are being pushed into dangerous Channel crossings because there are very few safe routes to reach the UK.
Instead of creating new safe routes, the UK government has introduced the cruel ‘one in, one out scheme’ in August 2025 as a pilot.
Under the scheme, people who have arrived in the UK seeking safety are being forcibly deported - often with the threat or use of violence - to France. Many of these people have fled war and persecution.
The scheme treats displaced people as bargaining chips — deporting one person to France in exchange for permitting one person in France to apply for asylum in the UK. These are all people, with hopes, dreams and ambitions.
Since the scheme began, migrants, lawyers and human rights organisations have documented grave human rights concerns including:
Nine UN experts have also raised concerns directly with the UK and French governments, warning that the UK is at risk of violating its domestic and international human rights obligations.
The evidence is clear: the UK-France agreement is causing serious harm and must end.
The current scheme is due to be extended on 11 June. Early Day Motion 119 is calling for it not to continue.
